Mistakes Everyone Makes When Growing Camellias

Camellias are stunning evergreen shrubs that add elegance to any garden, but they can be finicky if not properly cared for. Many gardeners make common mistakes that hinder their growth.

One frequent error is planting camellias in overly sunny spots. These plants thrive in partial shade, where they are protected from harsh afternoon sun.

Another mistake is poor soil preparation. Camellias prefer acidic, well-draining soil; alkaline or waterlogged conditions can lead to poor growth or root rot.

Overwatering is also a common issue. Camellias need consistent moisture but dislike soggy soil.

Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, but applying mulch too close to the base can cause fungal issues.

Pruning mistakes, like excessive trimming or cutting at the wrong time, can reduce blooms. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape without sacrificing buds.

Lastly, neglecting to protect against pests, such as scale insects or aphids, can weaken your camellias. Regular inspections and proper treatment will keep them healthy.
