Two glasses of tart cherry juice a day could slash the risk of having a stroke or heart attack, new research suggests.
The fruity beverage teems with healthy plant chemicals known as polyphenols that bring down blood pressure and cholesterol, thus shielding against cardiovascular conditions.
A study of folk aged 65 to 80 revealed those swigging the juice were less susceptible to inflammation and oxidative stress
There was also a 3% decline in MDA levels. It even revved up the function of OGG1, a gene implicated in DNA repair.
"Our findings suggest Montmorency tart cherry juice may be a good addition to a heart-healthy diet."
The trial had 34 mature lads and lasses randomly assigned to gulp down either 8 ozs of the juice or a placebo concoction twice daily over the span.
