How to Grow Sweet, Juicy Strawberries

Choose the Right Variety Select a variety suited to your climate. June-bearing strawberries produce a large crop in early summer, while everbearing varieties give smaller harvests throughout the season.

Pick the Perfect Location Strawberries need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day. Choose a well-draining spot with rich, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).

Prepare the Soil Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve fertility and drainage. You can also add slow-release fertilizer designed for strawberries.

Plant at the Right Time Plant strawberries in early spring after the last frost, or in fall in milder climates. Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation.

Water Properly Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves, which can cause disease.

Mulch Around Plants Apply mulch like straw or wood chips to help retain moisture, prevent weeds, and keep the fruit clean by preventing soil splash.

Prune and Care Remove dead leaves, runners, and damaged berries to improve airflow and focus the plant’s energy on fruit production.

Protect from Pests Use netting to protect strawberries from birds, and keep an eye out for common pests like slugs or aphids.
